What is the difference between -ed and -ing? A lot, actually. It's dramatically (and hilariously) different to say, I'm so excited! and I'm so exciting!

What's going on here? Let's start with the basic SVO sentence, It excites me. We can then flip that to the passive form, I am excited. Notice that there is now an -ed ending.

Or, instead of flipping it, we can add -ing, so It excites me becomes It is exciting. This way, the focus is on the subject. Fireworks are exciting. Driving fast is exhilarating.

Let's quickly review the relationships between nouns, verbs, and adjectives. As you know, a noun is a person, place, thing, or idea. Verbs are action words. Adjectives modify nouns. The adjective endings are -y, -ed, -able, -ible, -al, -ful, -ic, -ive, -less, -ous, -ent, -ant, etc. Let's see how flexible these forms can be.
